Unboxing the Orphek Natura iCon

 

In the unboxing video, Richard showcases the impressive packaging of the Natura iCon, emphasizing not only its secure design but also its sleek appearance.

 

 

He notes that the unit is predominantly made of aluminum, complemented by what appears to be a polycarbonate acrylic front cover.

 

 

One significant update Richard points out is the absence of an external antenna, a feature that was standard in previous Orphek lights. He views this design choice as a plus, noting that it enhances the unit's aesthetic appeal.

 

 

Additional information about Natura iCon Exceptional Durability:

 

Natura iCon is made of acrylic and high quality anti-rust/anti-corrosion anodized aluminum alloy. This anodizing process artificially changes the structure of aluminum oxide on the surface of the metal, therefore it provides a surface finish that is more durable, stain-resistant, and corrosion-resistant.

Orphek has developed Natura iCon with a more advanced design from the previous fixtures allowing the unit to be connected via App with a built-in antenna. This design improvement not only enhances the unit's overall aesthetics, but also streamlines its functionality making maintenance cleaning much easier.

 

Natura iCon Cooling System Review

 

As Richard discusses the new design of the Natura iCon, he highlights its efficient cooling system, which features strategically placed fans at the center and side ventilation openings. He comments on how this design not only enhances functionality but also looks impressive, with the aluminum housing providing a sleek and polished finish that seamlessly encases the entire unit.

The side openings for air to flow out of the Orphek Natura iCon LED lighting (commonly referred to as ventilation slots or air vents.) are openings designed to facilitate airflow and cooling, helping to maintain optimal operating temperatures for the lighting system.

 

HOW COOL IS THAT?

 

Orphek products are build to last, and with the new double surface cooling system we have achieved an improved thermal flow and dissipation of heat, therefore, a more resilient fixture and increased long-lasting life span of its LEDs.

 

Natura iCon's LED Review

 

 

Richard emphasizes that Orphek has designed the Natura iCon with a black acrylic top rendering a very protective shield to the LEDs. This feature effectively safeguards the light unit from salt corrosion over time, ensuring durability and longevity.

 

As he inspects the unit, Richard notes the impressive array of LEDs turning the light up - he saw tons of LEDS, counting 78 LEDs, but at this point did not comment on them so much.

 

He also discusses that Orphek is presenting exclusive 90 degree lens, which in his opinion may produce less intense PAR, but that will present more even spread of light, blanking the surface where the light is illuminating., so he understood the logics behind it.

Natura iCon's Power Supply Review

 

Richard points out that Orphek uses Meanwell Driver which he finds it much more reliable and overall a better product compared to the generic, non-name drivers coming in the lights of other brands. He also mentions that these drivers are a premium product, very expensive and rated IP65 which is ideal for salty environments. He is happy that Orphek does not cut corners.

Natura iCon's Performance Review - Turning the unit ON

 

Describing the process he notes that the unit instantly turns on when plugging into the electricity and that he was told by a colleague to expect a bluish spectrum. Digging for more information he brings out the fact that Orphek was inspired by the pristine blue oceans of Okinawa. In his opinion this will be positively received in the US due to its preference for bluish spectrums. Here he also mentions the 6w Dual Chip LEDs that would bring unlimited output of 468w, but that seems to be under driven to 150w at max capacity to control thermal issues that could also shorten the life span of the LEDs and board.

 

Richard also shares his thoughts on LED performance, suggesting that he would prefer the power to be allocated differently to enhance PAR levels in specific areas of the aquarium according to preferences.

Natura iCon comes with 78 Orphek’s customized high quality, high efficiency 6w Mixed Color Dual-Chip power LEDs (total of 156 individual LEDs Chip).

 

Orphek App Review

 

Richard demonstrates how to locate the Natura iCon light within the accompanying app, providing viewers with clear instructions on how to confirm its proper functionality. He walks through the process of setting up an account and showcasing the various pre-set programs and lighting modes available.

 

 

Impressed by the app's design he could see that Orphek spend a lot of quality time developing the app. He also mentions that Orphek has created Helius for optimum color pop and growth and a lunar mode that is the only real Moon cycle available in the market today.

 

As he showcases each channel, he highlights their distinct features and functionalities, allowing viewers to see how they can be adjusted to meet specific lighting needs. He display the LEDs layouts of each channel and the spectrum graphs provided in Orphek's website. Richard emphasizes that about how to set customized programs and he said that the settings are pretty much self explanatory.

 

He is also very excited about our Sun & Moon Synchronization feature and 10000% dimming control for coral spawning. That is something that interests him on a personal level because he has worked already with captive spawned coral babies and he would be very happy to see facilities using them.

PAR MEASURING BY SHANE of 24 7 Aquariums

 

 

To conduct the PAR measurement of the Natura iCon unit over the tank Shane utilizes an Apogee MQ 510 - Full-Spectrum Underwater Quantum Meter, to map out the general spectrum of the light to check if it is close to what Orphek provides in the product's webpage.

 

 

Measuring procedure starts from the top to the bottom of the tank, including far corners, with 100% intensity in all channels.

Designed to illuminate SPS & LPS coral reef aquariums up to 80 x 60 X 60 cm (31.4 X 23.62 x 23.62 inches), Natura iCon ensures that every corner of the tank is adequately lit, providing a perfect environment for coral health, color and growth.

 

 

To conclude the review, in the same opportunity they measure the fan noise/ performance after 2 hours running the light over the tank at full capacity and he notes that fan noise is barely noticeable a few steps away of the light and also barely audible coming close to the light.
